I am not big on New Years resolutions. What is the point of making a promise to yourself if you don’t take it seriously? For many people resolutions are easy to make but even easier to break. I decided that this year will be different. I am going to create a New Years resolution but call it a life-changing move and promise to myself. I am dedicating 2010 to myself and focusing on who I want to be in life and in my career. 2010 is not going to be an easy year for me I have to realize I will be working very hard with what I want. That is why I have created a step-by-step plan to make sure I am on the yellow brick road in search for my own emerald city.
I am a to-do list type of girl. I love nothing more than to write up a list of things that I have to get done and check them off when I have accomplished them. That is why I have created an outline, or blueprint, for not only myself but for all of you to make 2010 dedicated to you. Whether if you are just beginning your career and in life or well into it, this cheat sheet will make it easy for you to commit and follow through.
1.Make a list of your goals: Start off with a rough draft of things you want to accomplish. Career, family, diet, saving money–whatever it is, write it down on paper or save it on your desktop to get it down on something solid that you will not lose. After you do that look at it again and be realistic. Did you write down lose 20 pounds by November? Yet, you have plans to go out to dinner and drinks with the girls this weekend. If you want to lose 20 pounds you have to make sacrifices and may have to pass up those cosmos and bread baskets more often. Did you write down be successful and move up in your company? If you did and you are not putting yourself out there and taking chances at work, chances are you are not up for the next promotion. I have learned by writing goals down and then coming back to them later to re-evaluate them makes you look at it outside of the box. You have to mentally prepare yourself for the goals you have written down and hold yourself accountable. Many people who are successful got there through dedication and hours of hard work. Are you ready to work hard???
2. E-mail your list to friend’s and family: After narrowing down the list of goals for 2010 next step is to e-mail or make copies and mail them to all your closest friends and family. Anyone who you know will check up on you and make sure you are staying on track. I e-mailed my list last night to five people in my family and my friends. I told them in the e-mail that 2010 is the year of change for me and I would love the support of them making sure I stay focused and true to myself and my goals.
3. Be all that you can be: If you have on you list for example to be a better wife or mother, then do just that! create time to spend with the family think up new activities you all can do as a family. You want to run a marathon? Start researching marathons in your area and join a running group that will gear you up for that exciting journey. Make sure you do something everyday to help get closer to your goal.
4. Put your goals in your calendar every week: That way you will have a weekly reminder of what you should be doing to better yourself. I look at my calender often, so its nice to see my goals as a reminder to stay on track.
5. Like the famous Nike Phrase JUST DO IT!!!!!: Stop making excuses of why you can’t accomplish your goals you wrote down, you wanted this so stop complaining and JUST DO IT.
6.Take every opportunity that comes your way: Whether if your friend asks to go on a run on a Saturday morning or your boss asks you for drinks with clients, make the most of everything that comes your way. This is not the year to shy away. Speak up and include yourself in everything!
7.Reward yourself: After working so hard and staying so focused in 2010, reward yourself! You may not have received that promotion yet or reached your exact goal weight. But, if you did everything you could do to better yourself and you can see the change, take some time to congratulate yourself.
Nothing happens overnight. It takes lots of time and hard work. Just focus on what you want everyday and remember to never give up on what you want to achieve and who you want to become. This is your life and only you have the power to make things happen in it.
Here is to you and your fabulous new life in 2010!
