One of the trends I am falling in love with this week is mixing and matching patterns. I found a few pictures from some fashionista’s who executed this trend effortlessly. When matching 3 or more patterns, it is important that they are not the same design. This will prevent your patterns from visually competing with one another. For example: A striped skirt should not be worn with a striped blouse. Instead, exchange one of the striped patterns for a geometric pattern. This will give you a more cohesive look. Make sure you do not over doooo your patterns. Do not exceed three different patterns in a single outfit.
Olivia is wearing a busy floral skirt and the striped shirt is a good contrast because of the muted beige and orange color. Bianca is wearing a leopard jumper and mixed it up with different texture blazer. Margherita is the queen at carrying off multiple patterns. That is what Missoni is all about.
I took it upon myself to go shopping in my closet this morning and pick out a few looks that I will be wearing this week and sporting my love for this trend.
The leopard button up blouse ( Zara) is a busy top in itself. The polka-doted shorts I bought from Topshop complement the top without competing with it. By adding the Rebecca Minkoff croc embossed bag, I gave it an added texture dimension. The Mea Shadow cut out wedges work because they are a nude color that will blend into my skin and will make my legs appear longer. Lastly, I added the brown vintage belt to break up the patterns so it all look cohesive and flawless.
This Missoni Dress(shown below) works because of the monochromatic hues are in the same color family. The Yellow belt adds a pop of fun and yet is contrasting to the dress. Add a pair of leopard wedges that is minimal, only covering the toe’s. I would not suggest full animal print bootie. A little shoe flair complements the dress and belt.
Mixing and matching patterns can be done outside of just your clothes. I wanted to take a picture of my living room to show you that contrasting can also be used in interior design as well. I love bright colors and different textiles in my apartment and wanted to share just how fun and easy it is to add some spice to a living area as well as you clothing.
The main reason why I love mixing and matching is because you can have so much fun and be creative. The key to this trend is not taking it toooo seriously. NOW….Go to your closet, have fun and enjoy.
